The beginnings of ALFAFILM ltd. can be traced back to 1990 - just following the Velvet Revolution. It was in this year that ALFAFILM Inc., was founded by Jiří Blažek, Jiří Menzel, Theodor Pištěk, Rudolf Prokeš, Emil Sirotek, Ladislav Šťastný, Czechoslovak Filmexport, Krátký Film Praha, Film Studio Zlin and Kredit-Inc. This new company actively engaged in film and television production.

ALFAFILM Inc. originated through the initiative of previous employees of the former state-run company, Czechoslovak Filmexport. What followed were many years of successful work within co-production and service agency activities (please see Credits Page). Prior to 1990, the group had participated in and contractually supervised film and television projects, including:

Wallenstein/ Bavaria Atelier
All Quiet on the Western Front/ITC
The Fuggers of Augsburg/Elan Film
Yentl/United Artists
Amadeus/Saul Zaentz Co.
Howling II/Hemdale Holdings Limited
Beautiful Wilhelmina/UFA
The Torrents of Spring/Erre Produzioni S.r.l.
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase/Zenith Productions Ltd.
Das Brennende Geheimnis /Bavaria Atelier-Chelsea Films
The Raggedy Rawney/Handmade
Jupiter Moon/TV Andromeda
Martha und ich/Taurus Film
Kafka/Price,SA

There were many great Czech and foreign directors, producers, art directors, cameramen and others working together who occupy a unique place in Alfafilm's history. We would like to take this opportunity and give them the credits on the success of Alfafilm itself.

Alfafilm Inc., focused on TV films and feature films for France, Germany and Britain. The talented stable of actors that they worked with included such luminaries as, Max Von Sydow, Franco Nero, Annie Girardot, Nicole Garcia, Marie-France Pisier, Michele Picoli, Stefanie Powers, Patrick Bergin, Virginia Madsen, John Shea and Tobias Moretti. However, the company could not keep up with the fast-changing new economy.

Therefore, Alfafilm Inc. remodeled itself into the more flexible AlfaFilm Ltd in 1995. Building on the strong and successful track record of its predecessor, AlfaFilm Ltd. not only took over the philosophy of the former company, but also the responsibility for participating on high-quality internationally appealing projects.
